Berken allowed two runs in the first two innings, but settled down and pitched well enough to win. He ended up giving up two runs on seven hits through five innings, while walking three and striking out three.
Berken left in the fifth down 2-1; the O's had managed just a solo shot from Aubrey Huff in the second inning...with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Adam Jones drilled a 2-run blast (his 11th of the season) that gave the Birds a 3-2 lead and put Berken in the position to win the game. Nolan Riemold added a 2-run shot of his own in the sixth inning, and Brian Roberts' 2-run double in the eighth gave the Birds a 7-2 lead.
Relievers Matt Albers and Jim Johnson combined to pitch the final four frames, and allowed just two hits...Johnson was credited with his first save of the season.
The Birds go for the ever-elusive three-game sweep later this afternoon...Rich Hill(1-0) faces Toronto's ace Roy Halladay(8-1)...Go O's!!!
O' Yeah...
- THE BIG NEWS: O's catcher Matt Wieters will make his MLB debut on Friday! Can't wait!
- Koji Uehara will miss his next scheduled start...if he has to miss more than one start, David Hernandez may be brought up from Triple-A Norfolk to take his place in the rotation
- Lou Montanez elected to have surgery on his thumb and may miss the rest of the season
- Adam Jones grounded into his FIRST double-play of the season on Tuesday...pretty impressive considering he's the #2 hitter and has Brian Roberts ahead of him
